Rain Water Tank: An IBC Tote Update & A Question For You

September 17, 2022 by Michelle Leave a Comment

A Florida rain storm sprung up while I was out working in the garden and making a different video today. When I saw what was happening with the rain tank, I redirected my filming efforts to put this short video together.

If you've never seen the video where I show our different rain catchment systems, you can watch that here:

About IBC Totes
An IBC tote is a large, heavy-duty container for storing and transporting liquids. They sell new ones on Amazon (https://amzn.to/3ScLMKG), but you may be able to find some locally that were used for edible liquid transport. They are often used for industrial applications, such as storing chemicals or oil. But they can also be used for more mundane purposes, like storing rainwater or holding potable water for an emergency supply. So, how much water does an IBC tote hold? The answer depends on the size of the tote. A standard IBC tote holds 1,000 liters (264 gallons), but there are also larger totes that can hold up to 2,500 liters (660 gallons). That's a lot of water! And it's why IBC totes are such popular choices for those looking for a reliable way to store large quantities of water.

Is it illegal to collect rainwater?
It's a common misconception that it's illegal to collect rainwater. In reality, there is no federal law against rainwater harvesting. However, some states have laws regulating rainwater collection, so it's important to check the regulations in your state before starting a rainwater harvesting system. While rainwater harvesting is a great way to conserve water and reduce your water bill, there are some potential drawbacks. For example, rainwater can contain pollutants from the atmosphere, so it's important to filter rainwater before using it for drinking or irrigation. Additionally, rainwater storage tanks can become breeding grounds for mosquitoes if they're not maintained properly. Despite these potential challenges, rainwater harvesting is a great way to use one of nature's most abundant resources.

About Michelle in the Meadow
I am a suburban gardener located in zone 9A in Northeast Florida. I started growing in this suburban lot in 2019 and have expanded the garden every year. In 2020 I started making Facebook Videos about the garden, and in 2022 created this YouTube channel. I enjoy making content about my garden, what I’m learning, and from time to time the general vlog, too.

About our Garden
We have a 300+ day growing season in our area. We are currently growing in many raised garden beds of various sizes. Along both sides of the house, in grow bags, in the ground, in Greenstalk vertical planters, and pots on the patio.
