With all this cold weather – it was time to assess “what's left” and share the latest with you. Stick around to the end, and we'll give you the full list of what's growing on.
Fruit Tree Care in Northeast Florida (Zone 9A)
Northeast Florida's heat, humidity, and occasional hard freezes demand a thoughtful approach to fruit growing. Water deeply but infrequently to encourage strong root development, and mulch generously around the base to retain moisture and regulate soil temperature. Fertilize with a balanced fruit tree formula in spring and early summer — avoid feeding after August, as tender new growth stimulated too close to winter is vulnerable to frost damage.
Pruning & Shaping
Keep trees small and open by pruning in late winter before new growth begins. Aim for an open center or vase shape — removing the central leader encourages outward growth and keeps the canopy low and reachable from the ground. Remove any branches that cross, rub, or grow inward. Trim new vertical shoots (water sprouts) throughout the growing season before they take over. Little and often is better than one heavy annual cut, and keeping trees at 6–8 feet means better air circulation, easier harvesting, and no ladders required.
When freezes are forecast, cover smaller trees and move container plants indoors or into a sheltered spot. Don't be discouraged by freeze losses — many established trees will bounce back if given time and patience.

About Michelle In The Meadow
I'm growing on a 1/4 acre suburban lot. I started gardening here 7 years ago and am glad you are here.
We have more than 90 individual fruit trees and shrubs and more than a dozen different kinds of annuals growing on this property. The slopes make for some interesting ways to garden, but we're trying to make the best of it.
On the first Sunday evening of each month (7PM Eastern), I go live on YouTube sharing updates and answering your questions.
If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up and consider subscribing to follow along on all the happenings in my Northeast Florida Zone 9A Garden. Until next time, my friends, remember to drink plenty of water, wear high-quality sunscreen and have a fantastic day.
