Adding a Cattle Panel Trellis to the Top of Raised Garden Bed | Timelapse

March 30, 2023 by Michelle Leave a Comment

In this video timelapse, I will show you how I added a 16-foot-long cattle panel to my 8ft x 4ft raised bed. Enjoy!

I purchased this 16-foot-long cattle panel from my local Tractor Supply. It's been an excellent garden-hand!

A cattle panel can offer several benefits when used in a raised bed garden. Here are some advantages:

  1. Support for climbing plants: Cattle panels provide sturdy support for vining or climbing plants like tomatoes, cucumbers, peas, beans, or squash. These plants can grow vertically along the panel, maximizing space and making it easier to harvest the produce.
  2. Increased growing area: By utilizing vertical space with a cattle panel, you effectively increase the available growing area within your raised bed. This is particularly beneficial for small or limited garden spaces where maximizing productivity is important.
  3. Improved air circulation: The open design of cattle panels allows for better air circulation around the plants. This helps prevent the development of fungal diseases by reducing moisture buildup and promoting a healthier growing environment.
  4. Enhanced sunlight exposure: Placing a cattle panel vertically in a raised bed can optimize sunlight exposure for your plants. By angling the panel towards the sun, you can ensure that all parts of the plant receive adequate light, promoting better growth and fruit production.
  5. Increased shade: It's mighty sunny in the Sunshine State, so the shade created by a climbing plant on a trellis makes a great home for leafy greens, root vegetables, and some herbs.
  6. Easy installation and reusability: Cattle panels are typically made of sturdy materials like galvanized steel, making them durable and long-lasting. They can be easily installed by attaching them to the sides of the raised bed or securing them with stakes. Moreover, these panels can be reused for multiple growing seasons, providing a cost-effective and sustainable gardening solution.
  7. Versatility: Cattle panels are highly versatile and can be used for various purposes within a raised bed garden. Apart from supporting climbing plants, they can also be utilized as trellises, fencing, or barriers to protect your plants from pests or to delineate different sections of your garden.

Overall, incorporating a cattle panel into your raised bed garden offers numerous benefits such as improved plant support, increased growing area, better airflow, enhanced sunlight exposure, easy installation, reusability, and versatility. It is an excellent tool for maximizing productivity and optimizing plant growth in your garden.
