Tips for Building a Flower Box Around a Mailbox:
Site Preparation is Key: Before installing your Birdies raised bed, clear the area around your mailbox. Remove any grass, weeds, rocks, or debris. This will ensure a stable base and prevent unwanted plants from growing into your flower box.
Leveling for Success: Leveling the ground where you'll place the raised bed is crucial. A level base will prevent the bed from shifting or leaning over time, and it will ensure even watering for your plants. Use a level to check your progress as you prepare the site. If the ground is soft enough you may be able to press an unlevel side further in the ground.
Plant Selection Matters: Consider the amount of sunlight your mailbox area receives. Choose plants that thrive in either full sun, partial shade, or full shade. Research plant tags or consult with a local nursery to find the perfect flowers and foliage for your location. This will help your plants flourish!
For my flower box I chose Petunias and Society Garlic which can take the spring heat in Florida. As the season progresses, I may have to swap out the petunias for some more heat hardy as my mailbox is on the west side and gets morning sun AND afternoon heat.
Mulch Magic: After planting, add a layer of mulch around your plants. Mulch helps retain moisture in the soil, reducing the need for frequent watering. It also helps suppress weeds and keeps the soil temperature consistent.
Watering Wisely: Water your plants deeply but less frequently. Check the soil moisture before watering – usually, if the top inch of soil feels dry, it's time to water. Avoid overwatering, which can lead to root rot. The specific watering frequency will depend on the type of plants, the weather, and your soil. Observe your plants and adjust your watering schedule as needed.
