I Almost Ruined This Exotic Ginger | Growing Galangal in Florida

May 19, 2026 by Michelle Leave a Comment

I almost killed my galangal — watch to find out if it survived. 🌿 Epic Gardening Memorial Day Sale (up to 40% off): https://michelleinthemeadow.com/epic — code MEADOW saves you an extra 5%

I have a confession. You know how I say no plants without a plan? Well… I bought some galangal, left it in the dark to cure and sprout, and then forgot about it. It dried out. So last night I soaked it in water, and today we find out if my levels of imperfection have exceeded their limits. Galangal is one of those plants I have to grow myself — Mrs. Michelle uses it constantly in our Thai cooking and I simply cannot find it fresh locally anymore. I even tried ordering it online but it arrives frozen, and that just doesn't work. So we're giving these dried out rhizomes every chance we've got.
While we're at it I'm showing you what's happening in my accidental propagation station — a GreenStalk that became a baby maker. Figs, elderberry, peach, avocado, volunteer basil — all just stuck in and left to see what happens. Because I have a big hairy audacious goal of putting 500 edible trees and shrubs on my property across the creek, and I am not buying 500 trees.

I better get to kacalacking.

About Michelle In The Meadow

I'm growing on a 1/4 acre suburban lot. I started gardening here 7 years ago and am glad you are here.

We have more than 80 individual fruit trees and shrubs and more than a dozen different kinds of annuals growing on this property. The slopes make for some interesting ways to garden, but we're trying to make the best of it.
On the first Sunday evening of each month (7PM Eastern), I go live on YouTube sharing updates and answering your questions.

If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up and consider subscribing to follow along on all the happenings in my Northeast Florida Zone 9b Garden. Until next time, my friends, remember to drink plenty of water, wear high-quality sunscreen and have a fantastic day.
