My Raised Bed Garden Fails (and the Lessons I Learned!)

February 1, 2025 by Michelle Leave a Comment

Hey everyone! I'm sharing some of the mistakes I made in my raised bed garden this year so you don't have to repeat them. Consider these my hard-earned tips for a more successful garden:

Tip 1: Level Up Your Beds: Don't skip the leveling! Use a level and ensure your bed frames are stable before you add any soil.

Tip 2: Sun's Out, Placement's Key: Think about the sun's path before you build. And think about the seasons, too. My garden gets some unexpected shade from trees, which impacted my sun-loving plants. Observe your yard throughout the day to see where the shadows fall and plan accordingly.

Tip 3: Prune and Prosper: Don't neglect your fruit trees! I learned the hard way that regular pruning and thinning are essential. They improve air circulation, prevent overcrowding, and lead to a much better harvest. Research the specific needs of your trees.

Tip 4: Consistency is King (and Queen!): Plants need watering and nutrient consistency. My inconsistent approach led to some plants thriving while others struggled. Having a rain gauge was a big help to me. This season I'm going to finally get my irrigation setup properly.

Tip 5: Plan, Plan, Plan!: My biggest takeaway? Planning is paramount. Take the time to map out your garden, considering leveling, sunlight, tree placement, watering, and nutrient needs before you start digging.

Bonus Tip: Don't be afraid to ask for help! Talk to local nurseries, gardening experts, or even experienced gardening friends. We all make mistakes, but we can all learn from each other. Happy gardening!

About Michelle In The Meadow

I'm growing on a 1/4 acre suburban lot. I started gardening here 6 years ago and am glad you are here.

We have more than 80 individual fruit trees and shrubs and more than a dozen different kinds of annuals growing on this property. The slopes make for some interesting ways to garden, but we're trying to make the best of it.

On the first Sunday evening of each month (7PM Eastern), I go live on YouTube sharing updates and answering your questions.

If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up and consider subscribing to follow along on all the happenings in my Northeast Florida Zone 9B Garden. Until next time, my friends, remember to drink plenty of water, wear high-quality sunscreen and have a fantastic day.
