Will Torching Torpedo Grass Kill It?

July 19, 2024 by Michelle Leave a Comment

Are you plagued with Torpedo Grass? Do you have no idea how to kill it? Before you run out and order a torch, watch this video to the end to see the trial results. If you decide to give it a try, please use all safety measures. This is the one I purchased from Amazon: https://amzn.to/3WeD8z7 (affiliate link).

Torpedo Grass is the worst week I've ever encountered; it spreads faster than Bidens Alba and has a piercing root that just won't quit.

Next week, I'll be covering the area with landscape fabric. I buy this heavy-duty version from Amazon, and in 4 years, it has not failed to keep weeds from growing through. But occasionally, weeds grow from the top down through any little pierce in the fabric. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00…

In my area, torpedo grass is considered invasive, and I have no idea where it entered the scene, but dang, it is frustrating.

I asked Gemini AI for a few more tips on fighting Torpedo Grass in a mulched area. I've reviewed the content and agree.

Targeted Removal in Mulched Beds – Without Using A Torch

Unearth and Extract: Gently pull back the mulch around the torpedo grass to expose its base. Then, use a hand trowel or cultivator to carefully loosen the soil and dig out the entire plant, including as much of the rhizome as possible. Be meticulous to avoid damaging the roots of your desired plants.

Smother Individual Clumps: Cut circles of cardboard or use layers of newspaper to cover the torpedo grass, effectively blocking its access to sunlight. Replace the mulch on top to maintain a tidy appearance.

Solarize Strategically: If you have a larger area infested with torpedo grass, consider solarization. Cover the section with clear plastic for several weeks during the hottest part of the year. The intense heat buildup will kill the grass and its rhizomes. Just be sure to avoid covering your other plants.

About Michelle In The Meadow

I'm growing on a quarter-acre suburban lot. I started gardening here five years ago and am glad you're here.

On this property, we have more than 80 individual fruit trees and shrubs and more than a dozen different kinds of annuals. The slopes make for some interesting ways to garden, but we're trying to make the best of it.

On the first Sunday evening of each month (7PM Eastern), I go live on YouTube sharing updates and answering your questions.

If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up and consider subscribing to follow along on all the happenings in my Northeast Florida Zone 9B Garden. Until next time, my friends, remember to drink plenty of water, wear high-quality sunscreen and have a fantastic day.
