My Cedar Garden Bed Bottomed Out — Now What? #gardenfails

August 8, 2026 by Michelle Leave a Comment

I walked outside and something looked off — turns out the bottom of my elevated cedar garden bed had completely collapsed. In this video I show you what happened, why it happened, and how I rescued 18-month-old garlic chives before it was too late.

This cedar elevated bed was sent to me a few years ago to test — that company no longer sells this style, so this isn't a promotion or a warning about a current product. It's a lesson about soil.

The mistake: I filled this bed completely with soil and forgot the perlite. No aeration, no lightening agent — just dense, saturated dirt that got heavier every time it rained. Combine that with about 18 months of root growth and Florida's rainy season, and the bottom gave out.

What I did:

Rescued garlic chives that had been growing for about 18 months
Transplanted them into 5-gallon grow bags
Placed the grow bags in afternoon shade under the Thai eggplant while they recover

A note on garlic chives: they're forgiving plants — regularly cut and regrown — but I still want them settled with good soil before I harvest again.

This isn't the first time I've talked about what actually works (and doesn't) in a raised garden bed here in Northeast Florida. If you're building a raised garden bed in Florida, Zone 9b's heat and rain make soil weight and drainage a bigger deal than most raised bed guides account for — especially with a cedar elevated bed like this one. Perlite in raised garden beds isn't just about drainage; it's about keeping the whole structure light enough to hold up over time. I'll also show you how I'm restarting these garlic chives so they can keep producing for zone 9b cooking all year. If you're curious why raised garden beds fail, soil weight is one of the most overlooked reasons — right up there with poor bed support and skipping aeration in your raised bed soil mix.

If you've dealt with a raised bed getting too heavy or collapsing, I'd love to hear what worked for you in the comments.
