This is the shelf from my conversation with Alex at Habitual Hobbies — built, lit, and ready for seeds. No talking, no music cues, no explaining. Just the build.
It is a mishmash and I am not going to pretend otherwise. The lights don't match. Some came from a yard sale. The colors are different on every level because they were bought at different times for different reasons, and they all still grow seedlings. If you have been putting off setting up a station because you don't have a matching set, this is your permission slip.
Why I built it this way — Alex showed me a shelf trick I had never seen: instead of raising your lights as seedlings grow, you move the plants down to a lower shelf. Big plants at the bottom, seedlings at the top. That video is where the reasoning lives.

🌱 A FEW THINGS I LEARNED SETTING IT UP Set the shelf heights before you set the lights. Alex spent 40 minutes figuring out her heights first, and it's the step that makes everything after it easier. Put a light over every row, not every shelf. Two bars on a wide shelf leaves the plants at the edges reaching sideways. Check what else is on the circuit. Grow lights plus a printer plus everything else in a home office adds up faster than you'd think. Leave yourself a lower shelf empty. That's where the plants go as they get tall. If every shelf is full on day one, the whole method stops working.
📍 I garden in Zone 9b, Northeast Florida. This station lives in the corner of my office because the garden studio doesn't have power yet.

🌻 ABOUT MICHELLE IN THE MEADOW I'm growing on a 1/4 acre suburban lot in Northeast Florida, Zone 9b. We have more than 80 individual fruit trees and shrubs and more than a dozen different kinds of annuals growing on this property. The slopes make for some interesting ways to garden, but we're trying to make the best of it.
On the first Sunday evening of each month, 7PM Eastern, I go live here sharing updates and answering your questions.
