Alex has been gardening longer than me, she's younger than me, and she's better at it — because she actually studied. Here's her indoor seed starting setup, and the shelf trick that stops seedlings from getting leggy.
The short version: don't raise your lights as the plants grow. Move the plants down.
She sets her shelf heights to match her tray rows, keeps seedlings about two inches under low-output T5 LEDs, and moves each tray down a shelf as it gets taller. Big plants at the bottom, seedlings at the top. Costs nothing, and it fixes what most of us fight all spring.

❓ TWO QUESTIONS THIS RAISES
How far should grow lights be from seedlings? No universal number, and that's the lesson. It depends what your fixture puts out. Alex's shelf T5s measure 300–400 PPFD at the top of her containers — gentle enough to sit two inches away. The one high-output light in her grow tent runs about 1,600 PPFD at 18 inches and scorches those same seedlings. Measure yours, or start further away and move closer while watching for bleaching.
Why potting soil instead of seed starting mix? Alex's biggest tip. Seed starting mix drains well but holds little nutrition, so seedlings stall right when they need to grow. Potting mix gives you drainage AND water retention AND about six weeks of built-in nutrition. One bag covers a whole season of her seedlings.
