January Imperfect Garden Tour in Northeast Florida Before Winter’s Worst

January 17, 2026 by Michelle Leave a Comment

The “Imperfect Garden” Tour: Bracing for 27°F in Zone 9B. Welcome to another Imperfect Garden tour! We’re bracing for the coldest night of the year here in Northeast Florida. If you’re looking for a perfect garden, you’ve come to the wrong place—but if you want to see how we grow food, have fun, and protect our harvest from Jack Frost, stick around!

From harvesting bananas and Thai eggplants to wrapping the Mexicola avocado in old comforters, we’re doing our best to get ready. In this video, I’m sharing a key tip: the science of watering before a frost. Why soaking your soil works:

Thermal Battery: Moist soil is denser than dry soil. It “charges” by soaking up the sun's heat during the day and slowly radiating that warmth upward to your plants all night.

Latent Heat: When liquid water freezes, it releases a small burst of heat energy. This “hidden” science can keep your pepper plants just above the “kill zone.”

Cellular Strength: Well-hydrated plants have plump cells (turgor pressure) that are much more resilient against the stress of freezing than thirsty, weak cells.

In this tour:

  • The Senposai cabbage success story (I was right!).
  • Leaving habitat for the birds and lightning bugs in the meadow.
  • The mystery of the Vietnamese Salted Lemonade.

Where are you gardening? Let me know in the comments how you’re prepping for the cold!

Remember to drink plenty of water, wear that high-quality sunscreen, and always have a fantastic day!

About Michelle In The Meadow

I'm growing on a 1/4 acre suburban lot. I started gardening here 6 years ago and am glad you are here.

We have more than 80 individual fruit trees and shrubs and more than a dozen different kinds of annuals growing on this property. The slopes make for some interesting ways to garden, but we're trying to make the best of it.

On the first Sunday evening of each month (7PM Eastern), I go live on YouTube sharing updates and answering your questions.

If you enjoyed this video, please give it a thumbs up and consider subscribing to follow along on all the happenings in my Northeast Florida Zone 9B Garden. Until next time, my friends, remember to drink plenty of water, wear high-quality sunscreen and have a fantastic day.
